Petrolia to honor 150 years with food trucks, car show

Petrolia will honor 150 years since its founding — and open a time capsule from its 1973 centennial celebration — on Saturday, July 29.

The weekend celebration will be replete with a car show, food, basket raffles, games and music beginning at noon in Petrolia Park and stretching into the evening. Face painting and other children’s activities will also be available.

The event’s motto is “Turn the town back to 1973.” As Petrolia pays homage to the centennial celebration, visitors are welcome to participate in the ‘70s theme by dressing up in ‘70s attire.

Kristie Christie, event co-organizer, is preparing to go back in time by wearing flowered bell-bottoms.

“It’s for the memories,” Christie said. “We’re hoping the community will come out and have a good time.”

Classic and antique cars, along with modified street rods, will be on display during the car cruise at noon. A cornhole tournament with social and competitive divisions will begin at 1 p.m. Honorees and distinguished speakers will address the crowd at 3 p.m. and the 1973 time capsule will be opened at 4 p.m. The event will recognize Petrolia’s older community members, Christie said.

The basket raffle includes donations from Parkers Appliance, NexTier Bank and a local florist. Visitors will be able to try their luck to win gift cards, assorted stationary, live plants, wine and more. A 50/50 raffle will also take place during the event.

Food trucks, vendors and memorabilia displays will be set up throughout the afternoon and evening in Petrolia Park. Refreshments will include barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, ice cream, lemonade and more. Visitors will be able to buy tacos provided by Oil Boom Saloon, and local Boy Scouts will sell soda and funnel cake.

Music will play throughout the day, with DJ Frank Kepple on the mic at noon and local band Dusty Roads performing in the evening.

Admission is free. Visitors can bring lawn chairs for seating.
