State gaming revenues could help fund municipal projects in Slippery Rock Township

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Supervisors discussed a statewide grant that could help fund converting a salt shed into storage and the purchase of a truck and mower at a meeting on Monday, July 24.

The Local Shares Account-Statewide program, implemented through the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, distributes shares of Pennsylvania gaming revenues to eligible counties, municipalities and authorities.

Grant amounts vary based on project requirements, township engineer Dave Neill said after the meeting. According to guidelines, funding can be used toward projects that “improve the quality of life of citizens in the community” including, in the case of Slippery Rock Township, infrastructure and road projects. Supervisors have not yet decided the dollar amount of the grant they would request, Neill said after the meeting. The application closes Sept. 1.

Supervisors also discussed funding for a Community Development Block Grant program for McCandless Road. The township received approximately $200,000 in funding from the county for the three-year project in 2021-22, Neill said after the meeting. The project, which begins in 2024, would include improvements to drainage, pipes and ditches that would stretch from Boozel Road to the railroad crossing.

Supervisors motioned to sign an annual cooperative agreement with Butler County for the County to administer CDBG-related paperwork and funds.
