Moniteau softball blanked in semi

From staff reports

KNOX — Reyna Watson tossed a two-hitter Wednesday as Cranberry shut out Moniteau, 11-0, in five innings in their District 9 Class 2A semifinal softball game.

Emma Covert and Emily Staab had the only two hits for the Warriors (12-10), both singles. Cranberry took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning before pulling away with a big frame.

“We walked some people, made a few fielding errors ... It got away from us at that point,” Moniteau coach Bob Rottman said. “We were hurt by our own mistakes today.

“Our bats were out of sync the entire game. We swung at some bad pitches. We took some good pitches. Reyna put a good spin on the ball, something we hadn’t seen from her before, and pitched a great game against us.”

Cranberry and Moniteau split their two regular season meetings, the Warriors winning 9-7 on April 27, Cranberry winning 10-9 on May 15.

Moniteau will play a consolation game Monday in an effort to extend its season.

“I’m still in shock over what happened today,” Rottman expected. “I wasn’t expecting this. We were off our game early, fell behind right away ... We just never got going today.”
