Eight fighters from the Butler Cubs gym — including a pair of Western Pa. Golden Gloves champions — will be on the card Saturday night when the Butler Cubs hosts its annual amateur boxing show.

Leland Panosetti at 105 pounds and Damian Kast at 125 won Golden Gloves titles this year for the Cubs. Panosetti is 2-2 in his overall amateur career while Kast is 2-1.

“We should have had a third one,” Cubs boxing trainer Bill Wolfe said of the Golden Gloves competition. “But for the second straight year, there was no opponent for him. They were going to give him a trophy, anyway.”

Wolfe was referring to his son, Wyatt, who is 7-3 in his amateur career.

The other five Cubs boxers on the card are T.J. Weaver, Dom Zottola, Andy Diaz, Derek Eggleton and Jack Kesten.

“This is the most fighters we’ve had in this show in a long time,” Wolfe said. “We actually have 12 boxers ready to go, but we couldn’t find matches for the other four. It’s hard to find matches for everybody.”

There are 12 bouts scheduled on Saturday. The fights get under way at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door.

This annual show serves as the Cubs boxing progam’s fundraiser.

“We’ve been doing this since 1974,” Cubs boxing manager Don Spinetti said. “Rich Gregory was running the program then and asked me to help out. Rich retired a few years later and I’ve been doing this ever since.

“I’ve got plenty of help here. This is a pretty active gym.”

Wolfe estimates he works with 10 to 20 boxers every night in the Cubs gym.

“We get a few pros, a lot of amateurs,” Wolfe said. “We do sparring here on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so fighters come in from other gyms like New Castle, Ellwood City and Beaver. A lot of people come through here on those nights.”

While he lauded the efforts of his Golden Glove winners, Wolfe emphasized that “every fighter in this gym works hard.

“T.J. is a power puncher, for example, a strong body puncher. These guys will put on a show,” he added.
