Danny King, Judah Thompson lead Freeport’s comeback win; Karns City falls from ranks of unbeaten: Week 6 football highlights
Danny King avenged throwing a 95-yard pick-six with a big fourth quarter Friday night as Freeport football rallied for a 17-14 come-from-behind victory at Mt. Pleasant.
Brady Brooks’ interception return gave the Vikings a 14-7 lead at halftime. They maintained that lead through three quarters.
King connected with Camden Schlegel for a 62-yard touchdown pass, and Judah Thompson’s PAT tied the game. After forcing a three-and-out late in the game, the Yellowjackets returning the ensuing punt deep into Vikings territory and used a four-play drive to set up Thompson’s game-deciding 26-yard field goal with 2:22 left.
Mt. Pleasant’s final possession resulted in a turnover on downs near midfield. King wound up throwing for 139 yards for Freeport (5-1, 1-1 Allegheny 7 Conference).
Central Clarion 43, Karns City 14 — Early miscues doomed the Gremlins and cost them a 6-0 start to the season. The Wildcats (3-3, 2-1 District 9, Region 1) upset Karns City (5-1, 3-1) and got revenge for two losses last year, including in the District 9 Class 2A championship. No stats were provided from this road loss, but Bryce Galan weaved through the defense for a punt return touchdown of about 60 yards in the fourth quarter. Owen Kaufman scored KC’s first touchdown on a 53-yard run that made it 7-7 early. But a lost fumble and a rare mistake by QB Cole Johnston ended as a pick-six and kick-started Central Clarion’s runaway win.
Hempfield Area 41, Seneca Valley 14 — The Spartans (3-3, 2-1 Quad County Conference) handed the Raiders (2-3, 0-3) a third straight loss, but only after the teams combined for 42 fourth-quarter points. Rory O’Shea caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown as the biggest highlight of the Raiders’ night. He hauled in a floater to the front corner of the end zone for a 5-yard score. Nico Wheeler was 13 of 30 for 205 yards passing, and Matt D’Appalonia had seven tackles, two for loss and a sack for SV.
Cornell 59, Summit Academy 6 — The Knights ended a three-game scoreless streak in this one but still fell to 0-6. No stats were provided from this game.
