QB Nate Walker throws Mars football to road win over Shaler; Freeport boys soccer blanks Springdale: Roundup
Nate Walker threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mars football to a much-needed 17-14 road win Saturday at Shaler.
Walker was 18 of 33 passing. He hit Liam Corcoran for a 10-yard score early in the second quarter to give Mars (2-4) a 10-7 lead, then connected with Gus Goffield for a 45-yard TD in the fourth quarter for a 17-7 lead that proved the difference.
Coffield kicked a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter. Brady Brennan had four catches for 83 yards, and Jameson Garvin carried the ball 23 times for 91 yards.
Spencer Valasek scored twice to lead Freeport to a 3-0 win over Springdale. While Judah Thompson pitched a shutout in net, Caleb Passarelli scored the other goal. Zach Lasko, TJ Clark and Xavier Dewitt had assists.
North Catholic 1, Ambridge 0 — Jake Olkowski scored early, and goalie Logan Mueser and the defense held on for a shutout win for the Trojans.
Seneca Valley’s boys won the Grove City John Sample Invitational with 75 points as five runners finished in the top 25.
Ian Wahl and Hunter Peterson finished seventh (16:54.2) and eighth (16:55.7), respectively, to lead the Raiders. Chase LaPaglia (15th, 17:03.8), Jackson McClune (22nd, 17:24.5), Cameron Cramer (25th, 17:30.7) rounded out that quintet. Mars finished third, with Scott Kelly running a 16:58.8 to finish 14th, and Slippery Rock came in 13th with Zachary Geisner pacing the effort in 40th with an 18:05.2.
Hailey Long won the girls race in 18:24.9, and three Mars runners finished top 10 to lead the Planets to second (107 points). Norah Sondej ran 19:41.9 to finish fifth, and Monica Grunden ran 19:53.7 to finish eighth. Sophia Gearhart came in sixth with a 19:42.1 to lead Slippery Rock to ninth, and Seneca Valley finished sixth behind Paige Damico’s 20:53.5 (22nd).
Bald Eagle Invitational — David Kristine won the boys Class 2A race to power Freeport to a fifth-place finish. Kristine ran 16:11.98, and teammate John Hart came in third overall in 16:14.20. The girls finished third overall as Elizabeth Wesolosky came in ninth individually (21:00.86). Elizabeth Schwarz finished 27th in 21:54.86.
