Butler’s Campbell snatches long jump record from teammate Porch

Butler senior Ryan Porch broke the school long jump record that stood for 21 years.

He held the mark for about three minutes.

Fellow senior and Golden Tornado teammate Luke Campbell broke Porch’s mark moments later, leaping 23 feet, 6.5 inches to win the event at Saturday’s Tri-State Track and Field Invitational, hosted by West Mifflin High School.

Calvin Littlejohn set the previous Butler record of 23 feet, 3 inches, in 2003.

Campbell’s previous personal record in the long jump was 22-3. When Porch jumped 23-5.25, he eclipsed his previous personal-best by more than a foot as well.

“There was a big crowd watching us, so the adrenaline was there,” Campbell said. “I saw Ryan’s jump and just wanted to go a little bit farther. There was one jumper between him and I, so he didn’t have the record long.

“We expected to challenge for the record, just not this early in the season. Ryan and I are good friends. We push each other. We talked about our jumps on the bus ride home. We have a big meet Friday (Butler Invitational) and our sights are on 24 feet.”

Campbell and Porch placed 1-2 in the long jump at the meet.

Butler’s 4x400 relay unit of Chris Rubcic, Aaron Stebick, Drew Knight and Landon Lacey won with a time of 3 minutes, 24.42 seconds.

On the girls side, Butler’s Megan Baggetta won the triple jump with a meet-record leap of 38 feet, 7.5 inches. The previous mark of 38-3 was set by McDowell’s Sheena Gordon in 2003.
