Man charged again for loaning customer vehicles

A Cranberry Township man has been charged again with driving and renting out his customers’ cars without their permission instead of repairing them, police said.

New charges were filed Wednesday, March 29, against Keith R. Smith for a series of March incidents. He is charged with felony fraud, six counts of misdemeanor theft and unauthorized use of motor vehicle, and two counts of misdemeanor unlawful business practice.

Documents showed a woman dropped off her 2015 BMW at Oilology, an automotive repair business owned by Smith, in January. The woman reported paying $3,856 through her insurance carrier for collision repair, as well as $900 directly to Oilology.

With the vehicle repairs estimated to take nine days, the woman obtained a rental car. Police said the repairs still had not been done when they spoke with Smith on March 29.

Smith told police he gave the woman access to a Subaru Tribeca after her rental expired. According to documents, the Tribeca belonged to another male customer, who dropped it off at Oilology for repairs in late 2021.

The man also had a 2009 Nissan Rouge in Smith’s possession for repairs, but it was not found at Oilology. Police said Smith had loaned it to a friend for a year, and it was located at the Pittsburgh International Airport in Allegheny County.

Police discovered that several other vehicles at Oilology were loaned to customers.

In one instance, a customer’s vehicle had been in the shop for over a year, and he’d received five different vehicles as loaners from Smith.

Smith was charged with similar offenses in another case filed Monday, March 27.

According to court documents, Smith was placed in Butler County Prison on Wednesday, and posted a $75,000 bail on Thursday. A preliminary hearing for both cases is scheduled April 14 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty.
