Mars girls advance with win

Planets top York Suburban on road in PIAA play, 49-40

Vita Vargo scored 13 points and Mars jumped out to a big lead early in topping York Suburban, 49-40, Saturday in PIAA Class 5A girls basketball tournament play.

Olivia Donnelly and Lauren Atwell added nine points each for the Planets (18-8), who grabbed a 13-3 lead in the first eight minutes and led by 11 points at halftime.

Janay Rissmiller led host York Suburban with 20 points.

Mars will take on District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (22-1) — a 48-30 winner over Trinity — in the second round of the state tourney at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon High School.

Bowling

Butler and Freeport both reached the semifinal round of the Western Pa. Girls Team Regionals on Saturday and will compete in the state tournament this Saturday in Erie.

The Yellowjackets’ Julia Cummings made the all-tournament team with a 603 series. She had games of 210 and 203.

Freeport topped the 20-team field through eight baker games with a 3,533. Butler was sixth with a 3,215 to gain the last quarterfinal spot in the step-ladder portion of the tournament. The Golden Tornado defeated Deer Lakes 165-160, 163-149, before dropping a 160-125, 173-149 decision to eventual champion Plum in the semifinals.

Top-seeded Freeport dropped a 182-145, 171-137 decision to Norwin in the other semifinal. Natalie Coughenour led Butler with a 536 series, the seventh-highest individual series in the team tourney. The Tornado’s Kelsee McConnell was 10th with a 519.

Cummings reached the finals of the girls individual regional tournament Friday, losing to champion Victoria Medrick of Conneaut Area, 198-136. Cummngs defeated Freeport teammate Mackensie Livingston 204-161 in the semifinals.

Both will advance to the state singles tournament. Cummings rolled a 995 five-game series, incuding games of 219 and 232, to lead the qualifying round. Livingston rolled an 874 for the 12th and final qualifying spot.

Butler’s McConnell finished 13th with an 866 series.
