Pine-Richland/Mars Area U.S. Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp) Drill Teams took first place overall in the Parkersburg JROTC Drill Meet Feb. 18 at Parkersburg South High School in West Virginia.

The JROTC Drill Teams earned first place in the JV Unarmed (led by sophomore Bella Gillette) and Varsity Unarmed categories; second place in the Varsity Color Guard (led by junior Alanna Shaw), Varsity Armed Drill Team, JV Armed Drill Team, and Uniform Inspection (led by junior Reva Kalbhor); and third place in the JV Color Guard (led by sophomore Ryan Galbraith) event.

In individual knockout competition, junior Reva Kalbhor and sophomore Erin Kemp placed in the Top 10 of the Varsity event.

Two teams of Mars Area Middle School students competed in the 2023 Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional Middle School Science Bowl, held virtually March 4.

The team of eighth-graders James Foster, Nolan Horvath and Conner Liu and seventh-grader Jeffrey Irwin advanced to the first elimination round and finished in 12th place. Team member Preston Musser, a seventh-grader, was unable to participate in the competition.

The team of eighth-graders Sophia Gourash, Brett Kelly, Ava Moravek and Grace Nam advanced to the second elimination round and took seventh place.

The students, who competed against teams from local middle schools, were asked questions related to biology, chemistry, earth and space, energy, mathematics and physics.
