Senior drivers face hidden challenges

I am writing about the article in the Eagle on Dec. 8 titled “Senior drivers should be aware of ability, come up with plan.” I know it has been a few months, but with the holidays and family I am just getting around to writing this letter. For the most part, the article makes some good points.

First, I am a senior driver and I do take the Senior Drivers Safety Course online. Yes, there are some seniors, as well as a lot of other people, who should not be driving, but there is not always an easy solution to the problem. A person cannot always get a relative to take them to doctor’s appointments. The relatives work and employers are not always willing to accommodate employees taking off work to help family in this way.

Yes, the Butler Transit Authority does have routes for the city and townships listed in the article, but that does not help people who live in other areas of Butler County. As far as the Butler Area Rural Transit, they do not travel very far from Butler to help a person get to appointments.

I live approximately 20 miles north of the city; they will not come this far. I have had different relatives contact them and are not able to get a ride. So, it is sad to say, some seniors have to depend on themselves to get somewhere, and most of them do try to do the best that they can.
