Kelly supports IRS whistleblower program reform
U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly, R-16th, was among those who introduced an effort to reform the Internal Revenue Service’s Whistleblower Awards Program, a Friday news release from Kelly’s office said.
Kelly joined with Mike Thompson, R-4th, along with Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Roger Wicker of Alabama and Ben Cardin of Maryland to introduce the IRS Whistleblower Program Improvement Act.
“Whistleblowers are essential to ensuring the integrity of our tax laws,” Kelly said in a statement. “Exposing wrongdoing by tax cheats and fraudsters guarantees our voluntary tax system is fair for all Americans.”
The IRS’ whistleblower program offers monetary awards to individuals who provide actionable information on individuals and businesses that do not comply with tax law.
The act includes six measures to improve the program’s fairness and protect whistleblowers. These measures include allowing new evidence to be admitted for appeals previously heard by the U.S. Tax Court, increasing anonymity for whistleblowers and improving the award system for participants.
