Freeport Area agate

At their meeting Wednesday evening, the Freeport Area School District board of directors:

* Heard business manager Brad Walker recommend a 10-cent increase in lunch prices starting in the next school year. The current cost of lunches for secondary students is $2.75 and $2.65 for elementary students, which Walker said is lower than many surrounding school districts. The board is expected to vote on the increase Wednesday.

* Heard they will be asked to vote next week on accepting a state Commission on Crime and Delinquency grant in the amount of $258,148 for mental health supports or security upgrades. Superintendent Ian Magness said the funds would pay all costs for the district’s professional counselor and an additional school police officer for the current school year.

* Discussed a recommendation by Magness to purchase virtual reality apparatus to replace outdated, unserviceable equipment now being used. The VR goggles, controllers, foam cubes and access to online VR curriculum for one year would cost $18,814. The funds would come from the technical budget, Magness said. The board is expected to vote on the purchase Wednesday.

* Discussed a potential increase in rates to rent certain school facilities. Adam Toncini, school board president, said the facilities must remain accessible to community youth organizations.
