Car fleeing police results in crash

A vehicle Saxonburg police tried to pull over for a traffic citation Sunday night crashed in a field on Stoneybrook Road in the borough after fleeing, according to officials.

The incident, which resulted in injuries, remains under investigation, police said.

Joe Beachem, borough police chief, said Monday that an officer was stationed on West Main Street around 11 p.m. when a vehicle passed without working taillights.

“The officer activated his siren and lights, and the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed,” he said. “He notified 911 that the vehicle took off, and he was terminating the pursuit. A few minutes later, he got called to an accident.”

Beachem said residents reported hearing a loud bang and seeing vehicle lights in an area near Constitution Avenue at the time of the crash.

Police said groans could be heard from the vehicle as they approached, and the unidentified male driver suffered an ankle injury and was transported from the scene to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, according to documents. Beachem added that all air bags deployed at the time of the crash and a door was sheared off.

The crash is under investigation, Beachem said, and state police have been asked to create a crash report.

Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene.
