Butler girls back on track

Tornado edge Hempfield by two

Rebounding from a loss at North Allegheny Tuesday night, Justine Forbes and Amelia McMichael combined for 40 points as Butler downed Hempfield, 65-63, on the road Thursday.

Madison McGarrah also reached double-figures, pouring in 13 for the Golden Tornado (7-7, 2-2). Butler will play Pine-Richland on Monday, recognizing its youth basketball programs at halftime.

Mars 50, North Hills 44 — Vita Vargo netted 18 points, Annalyn Isaacs 10, and Lauren Atwell 15 as the Planets earned this away victory. Atwell added 10 boards to post a double-double.

Freeport 60, Derry 29 — Brooke Kmetz led the Yellowjackets with 17 points in this lopsided triumph. Morgan Croney (16 points), Melaina Dezort (15), and Natalie Volek (10) added to the scoring effort.

Knoch 60, Valley 27 — Using a six treys, the Knights (8-4, 4-1) led by 16 after one frame and 24 at the midway point against the Vikings. Nina Shaw spearheaded the scoring, pouring in 13 points, while CeCe Kosecki and Hattie McGraw both pinned up 10.

Knoch will play a big WPIAL Section 1-4A matchup with North Catholic on Monday.

Moniteau 57, Forest Area 19 — Kendall Sankey had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors (9-3).

Catherine Kelly continued her strong junior campaign with 19 points and four assists. Allie Pry added 13 points and five steals.

Karns City 47, A-C Valley 5 — Savanna Prescott led all scorers with 11 points for the Gremlins (7-4).

Cranberry 39, Union 22 — The Damsels (3-10) were limited to just seven points in the second half of this loss.

Boys Basketball

Dawson Camper scored 14 points to pace Union, but the Golden Knights fell at home to Cranberry, 68-55.

It is the third straight defeat for Union (6-5).
