Megan Baggetta broke her own school record in the triple jump Saturday as Butler opened its indoor track and field season at the Kevin Dare Invitational at Penn State University.

Baggetta leaped 36 feet, 9.5 inches to set a new record and win the triple jump event. Her previous school mark was 36-8.25. The leap also qualified her for the Pa. Indoor State Championships.

Grace Nichols placed second in the high jump for the Golden Tornado with a personal best height of 5-3. She qualified for the Indoor State Championship as well. Ava Brewster placed 10th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 11.94 seconds. That was her personal best time.

On the boys side, Butler’s 4x800 meter relay team of Drew Griffith, Drew Knight, Aaron Stebick and Zachary Slear placed fourth in 8:28. Luke Campbell placed sixth in the long jump at 19-9.5 and seventh in the high jump at 5-9. Markeis Frazier placed 10th in the shot put with a heave of 41 feet, 7.5 inches.

Griffith also received the Kevin Dare Heart of a Lion Award for showing courage, sportsmanship and leadership in track and field. Griffith overcame injuries early in his career to excel as a distance runner for the Tornado.

Dare was a pole vaulter at Penn State who was tragically killed while competing in 2002.

There were 40 total teams and athletes from 40 other schools competing in the Dare Invite.
