Christmas Eve too cold for East Brady’s luminaria display
EAST BRADY — The plans were in order to light up East Brady for a second Christmas Eve via a community-wide luminaria display, but the weather did not cooperate.
According to East Brady borough secretary Susan Buechele, who is also a member of the East Brady Area Development Corporation, she had come up with the idea of setting luminaria — a paper bag containing a candle and weighted by sand — along the left side of the East Brady Bridge last year.
“We got a few volunteers and put out the luminaria before dark,” said Buechele. “Then we went to Mass and came back and lit them.” She said the long-burning candles lasted until midnight.
“My daughter Jenna Rupert and our families set them out. We had 180 of them on the bridge. It’s a pretty big bridge,” said Buechele.
This year, Buechele and fellow East Brady Area Development Corporation member Toni Henry hoped for a bigger display, but the cold kept them from putting out the display.
The East Brady Area Development Corporation, according to Henry, promotes community tourism. She is the secretary of the organization.
