Enjoy unique runs over the holidays

I love to see the holiday lights, hear the joyous and thoughtful sounds of the season and experience the warmth of friends and family as we celebrate Christmas together. As the song says, “These are a few of my favorite things.”

But my least favorite things about the season are the hustle and hassle of Christmas shopping, the tight schedule of activities and the melancholy of remembering Christmases gone by and loved ones far away. I’m not actually a Grinch, but sometimes I act like one, especially when I can’t run away from the Christmas crunch.

Stress. The stresses and responsibilities of holiday preparation leave us craving the physical and mental relief of running. But just when we need a run the most, time constraints prevent us from getting out for our daily training. That piles on more stress as we regret unfinished workouts and plummeting fitness graphs.

Runners already know that exercise is one of the best remedies for stress. Although it’s not much for runners used to putting in miles and hours of strenuous activity, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise per week for general health. That’s a little more than 20 minutes per day.

If you find that you don’t have time for that 2-hour long run during the Christmas crush, don’t add to your stress by fretting over it. Settle for a quick half hour on the treadmill or take Fido for a brisk walk. Those few minutes and miles may not lead to peak performance, but you’ll be on track to resume training in January.

Allostasis. The concept of allostasis proposes that the body draws from several systems in order to survive at a steady state. That means that we only have so much mental and physical energy to go around.

Responding to stress requires more of all our systems. Stress can be hard on the nervous, cardiac, digestive and immune systems as well as our social systems. Overstress can lead to fatigue, elevated heart rate and illness — symptoms similar to those of over-training.

Rather than add to your stress level by running or exercising harder, focus on getting adequate rest during the holidays. Try to get to bed at the same time each day. And limit the late evening intake of rich holiday foods and alcoholic drinks which lead to poor sleep.

Outdoors. As reported in Harvard Medical School’s Health Publishing, spending 20 minutes connecting with nature helps lower stress hormone levels with 20-30 minutes associated with the largest drop in cortisol levels.

It may be worth a short drive to one of our many local parks for a run on a scenic trail. Or take the family for a walk in the park before heading to Grandma’s for Christmas dinner. (Be sure to take a leash for Fido.)

If you head to the woods, especially when alone, dress for the weather and the weather report. And dress in highly visible colors in case your natural area allows hunting.

Run through the lights. One of my favorite December activities is to tour the local holiday light displays on foot. Whether you head out alone through your neighborhood streets, accompany friends and family on a rambling search for the best local display or join an organized tour of Pittsburgh’s downtown, it’s a magical time.

No matter where you run at night, be sure that you can see and, just as important, that you can be seen. And remember, Christmas comes once a year. Slow down and enjoy the spirit of the season. We’ll have plenty of time to train in January.
