Inmate accused of assaulting corrections officer

An inmate at Butler County Prison is facing felony charges for assaulting a corrections officer, according to documents filed Monday, Dec. 5.

Butler County detectives charged Deonta M. Mobley, 29, of Pittsburgh, with assault by a prisoner for an incident that occurred around 12:20 p.m. that day.

Detectives said Mobley shouted and was disruptive in his cell all morning. He continued his disruptive behavior and corrections officers told him he would be moved to a different cell, according to the affidavit.

A corrections officer informed Mobley, who refused to pack up his belongings, that he was not to resist when a hand was placed on his shoulder, detectives said.

Detectives said Mobley threw multiple punches at the officer’s head as the officer reached for him. According to documents, Mobley continued his assault until officers brought him to the ground.

Following the altercation, one officer had marks on his head and an abrasion on his elbow.

Detectives said the entire altercation was caught on security footage.

Mobley has been incarcerated since September 2016 after he was sentenced for leading a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash at Route 8 and one of the Clearview Mall exits in Center Township.

The incident began when officers responded to a report of suspected drug activity in a parked Chevrolet Impala.

Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over on North McKean Street, but it continued onto Main Street, going more than 80 mph, according to court documents.

Police pursued the vehicle until it reached the intersection, where it crossed over the median between the mall's entrance and exit lanes, hitting another vehicle.

Mobley fled the scene and was apprehended as he was running from a wooded area near the mall, police said.

Mobley had $1,446 in cash on him, as well as a small purple pill with a heart-shaped stamp on it, suspected to be ecstasy, according to the report.

The Impala was towed, but not before police found in plain view 101 bags of heroin, a plastic bag containing a pack of cigarettes which contained a small amount of marijuana, and a plastic bag containing 5.3 grams of crack cocaine, according to the police report.

He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $200,000 bail and initially charged with felony fleeing, two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, three misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana and several traffic citations.

Mobley’s preliminary hearing for this case is scheduled Monday, Dec. 12. He remains in prison in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
