Boyers man accused of shooting a truck, police say

A Boyers man faces felony charges after he shot at a truck with someone inside, state police allege.

On Sunday, police charged Richard A. DeMatteis Jr., 58, with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief following an incident at his Washington Township residence.

DeMatteis was arraigned Monday morning before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell and placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bond.

According to charging documents, the witness arrived at DeMatteis’ house at 1:21 a.m. Sunday driving a pickup truck intending to retrieve a van she owned.

DeMatteis exited the residence holding a shotgun, police said, and refused to give the van to the witness. According to the affidavit, DeMatteis pointed the shotgun at the pickup truck while the witness was in the driver’s seat.

The witness told police she heard a loud noise and thought DeMatteis had shot the truck. DeMatteis then obtained the keys to the witness’ truck and fled before police arrived.

Charging documents said a 12-gauge shotgun casing was found near the front porch of DeMatteis’ residence, and damage to the truck’s hood was consistent with shotgun pellets.

DeMatteis’ will appear for a preliminary hearing Nov. 15 before District Judge Lewis E. Stoughton.
