Raiders season ends in semifinals

MONROEVILLE — Lightning struck once for Seneca Valley.

Too bad it wasn’t twice.

Raiders senior Kendall Walton’s goal directly off a corner kick leveled the scoreboard at two in the 72nd minute, breathing life into her team after a difficult second half at Gateway High School’s Antimarino Stadium.

North Allegheny’s Jadyn Coy snatched the hope away soon after, downing SV in the semifinal round of the WPIAL Class 4A tournament and ending the Raiders’ season.

“We just fought so hard to come back,” SV coach Mark Perry said. “We make it 2-2 and we just got caught up a little bit. We couldn’t get back and they did what good teams do — they capitalized on their chances.”

The Raiders (13-2-2, 11-1-2) gave up just seven markers the entire campaign. Four of them came against the nearby rival Tigers.

“We knew it was going to take some goals to beat us,” Perry said. “We got two on them, but it just wasn’t enough.”

SV beat North Allegheny (19-1-0, 13-1-0) in the teams’ initial meeting this year, a 2-1 decision on Sept. 23.

“That was kind of that moment, a little bit of a wake-up call,” Tigers coach Chuck Kelley said. “Things were going really well for us throughout the season. We had a lot of things clicking, players connecting with one another — a good chemistry — and then we played them in an afternoon game.”

Since then, North Allegheny has notched nine consecutive victories.

After Walton’s second score of the night knotted it up late, that streak was up in the air — not to mention trips to the WPIAL title game and a berth in the state playoffs.

“There’s a natural response that could easily be, you dwell on that and it’s something in the past,” Kelley said. “Or is it, you’ve moved on and you’re ready for the next play? We have a lot of characters on our team that understand the moment.”

This was after the crews entered halftime tied at one apiece and the Tigers’ Lucia Wells got on the board a little over two minutes into the second half.

“We had to fight all night,” Perry said. “We didn’t have a very good start. We were very nervous ... We sort of got our bearings, then we got a goal and — to be at halftime — we were happy to at 1-1.”

Junior goalkeeper Mia Humphreys recorded 14 saves in the loss. North Allegheny out-shot the Raiders 27-12.

“We lost 12 players from last year’s team,” Perry said. “Not many people expected us to be here. I thought we played hard enough and good enough to win tonight, but they just happened to get the last goal.”

The Tigers will face off with Peters Township in the finals.
