Tornado stun PetersTownship

7th-seed Butler boys soccer team blanks No. 2 seed, 1-0

PETERS TWP — Cody Lubinsky made no mistake. Drew Knight allowed no goals.

Butler’s boys soccer team is headed to the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals as a result, the seventh-seed Golden Tornado upsetting No. 2 seed Peters Township, 1-0, on the latter’s field Saturday afternoon.

The game’s lone goal came off the foot of junior midfielder Lubinsky on a penalty kick with 21 minutes, 42 seconds remaining. Lubinsky received that opportunity when teammate Isaac Boring was knocked to the turf while in the box.

It was Lubinsky’s third penalty kick of the season. He’s scored on all of them.

“I mix it up. You don’t want to go to the same spot all the time, give the other team something they may see on tape,” Lubinsky said. “I chose the place I was gonna go with the ball and just concentrated on that.”

That place was the left corner of the net. Peters Township goalkeeper Markus Bizyak leaned slightly the other way as Lubinsky cut it loose.

Lubinsky’s goal was Butler’s first shot on net all day. The Tornado (13-4-2) put two shots on goal to Peters Township’s 14 in the contest. The Indians (14-3) — who had a four-game winning streak snapped — had seven corner kicks to Butler’s two.

“There’s only one statistic that matters and that’s the one on the scoreboard,” Peters Township coach Bob Dyer said. “You have to stick one in the net and we didn’t. Their goalkeeper played great. He did what he had to do and we didn’t.

“That penalty kick was the right call. He (Boring) got knocked down in the box. I had no problem with that call at all.”

Butler goalkeeper Knight stopped all 14 shots on net, including lunging stops on Steven Suchko and Carter Helbig less than two minutes apart, late in the first half.

Knight dove to make a save on Matthew Milliken’s hard shot from 25 yards out early in the second half. The ball was ticketed for the high corner, but Knight deflected it wide. He also leaped to deflect Roman Milani’s high shot from 45 yards out in the game’s eighth minute, getting fingertips on the ball to prevent it from going in.

“Drew’s been great all season,” Butler coach Troy Mohney said. “He came up big today. He kept us in this game until we were able to get one.”

Knight said: “I felt like I was in the zone today. Just lock in and don’t let anything through.

“When I watched Cody score that goal ... It was one of the top five moments of my life.”

Lubinsky marveled at Knight’s performance in the net Saturday.

“I’ve never seen Drew play better — and he’s been tremendous all year,” Lubinsky said. “He was unbelievable in this game.”

Butler dropped a 2-1 decision at Peters Township in the playoffs last season, also on the Indians’ turf.

“There’s no such thing as revenge here,” Mohney said. “This is a new season and these are new teams. But this is a good program win. We came down here seeking a little more respect and I think we did that.

“Peters Township plays an aggressive style, they come up and mark everybody. That makes it tough, but if you get behind them, there’s room to work. That’s what happened to create our goal.”

Butler has won six of its last seven games, outscoring the opposition 14-3 during that stretch.

Butler will take on Pine-Richland — a 3-1 winner over Norwin Saturday — in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at North Allegheny’s Newman Stadium. The teams split during the regular season, by scores of 1-0 and 2-1.

“All four teams from our section are in the semifinals,” Mohney said. “I think that says something for our league.”
