Preserve the Old Stone House
I am writing with concern regarding the recent news of the closing of the Old Stone House outside of Slippery Rock, Pa., currently operated by Slippery Rock University.
The initial information in April of this year was that the museum was closed only for the summer, and the reason that the university gave at that time was that the roof of the main building needed to be repaired, and therefore, the museum would not open for the summer.
As of a few weeks ago, the roof had not been replaced. The roof of the spring house has collapsed, and that building is in very bad repair.
More recent news indicates that the current university president does not intend to reopen the museum and has indicated the property should be returned to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission or sold.
I am of the strong belief that it would be a great loss to the community to have this property sold to a private individual and that the museum should remain open as a historical site.
I am also of the opinion that, as the current president is retiring in May 2023, he should not be making such a decision at this point in time. The decision should be left to the next president and his or her administration.
I was born and raised in Slippery Rock, and was a volunteer at the Old Stone House during my middle school and high school years. Although I no longer live in the area, Slippery Rock and the Old Stone House remain near and dear to my heart.
I urge the community to let the university and public officials know that the Old Stone House is an important asset to the community and must be preserved.
