Elections should be based on merit
The Butler Eagle on October 14th gave us a very disturbing headline: “Tens of millions of dollars from out-of-state donors pour into Pa. governor candidates’ campaigns.”
We have PACs (political action committees) that have the ability to spend large amounts of money to influence our leaders. This system will destroy our democracy by leading us back to plutocracy, where the rich use their wealth to gain power to serve their own purposes, thereby depriving the majority of their welfare and liberty.
It will return us to the system of lords and peons. Many of our fathers fled Europe to escape this system.
We should not allow non-residents or out-of-state corporations to give money to Pennsylvania candidates. We should elect candidates on their own merits and not be bought by the wealthy.
The other thing that disturbs me is the ability of people in foreign countries to own large pieces of land in the U.S. This should not be allowed.
Harold Larrick, Butler
