Turnovers doom Tornado in 39-6 loss

PITTSBURGH — Michael Richardson burst through the line of scrimmage in the second quarter, snaring the ball from Butler quarterback Mac Schnur’s hands enroute to a 15-yard touchdown run. The Westinghouse linebacker’s score was only the midway point of the Golden Tornado’s never-ending nightmare Friday night at Cupples Stadium.

The first five possessions during Butler’s 39-6 loss all ended in turnovers, including four Westinghouse interceptions. The Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the PIAA Class 2A media poll, cashed all of them in for touchdowns.

Butler coach Eric Christy said the Golden Tornado couldn’t afford to make mistakes against Westinghouse. When it came to fruition, it was difficult to stop the train.

“It went quickly,” Christy said. “When you play a good team, you have to adjust quickly. The first play we were excited about, we hit a good RPO route. Then we had some mishandled snapping, blocking and everything snowballed from there.”

What may be most devastating about the result for Butler (4-3) is this result comes during the most difficult stretch of its schedule.

The Golden Tornado lost to Seneca Valley last week and will have tough matchups ahead with Cathedral Prep and McDowell. To wind up with a winning record, Butler would have to win two of its last three games.

Christy had hoped the early wins would translate to a confident performance.

“That was the hope, we wanted to build confidence and get guys together,” Christy said. “Tough teams are tough teams. We have to come back and find a way to get into it. That’s the next part of this program where it has to build. We have to take these games and compete in them.”

The Bulldogs (6-0) let the Golden Tornado know early it would be a rough night. On the third play from scrimmage, Westinghouse defensive back Khalil Taylor made a diving effort at a tipped ball and hauled in an interception along the side.

Bulldogs quarterback Keyshawn Morsillo scored on a two-yard run on the ensuing possession to give Westinghouse a lead it would never lose with 8 minutes, 12 seconds left in the first half. Schnur would be intercepted again on Butler’s second possession when Keyshawn Robinson high-pointed an intercepted on the Bulldog 30.

Westinghouse coach Donta Green wanted to see the Bulldogs pounce on mistakes. Westinghouse forced six turnovers, including five interceptions.

“That’s something we talked about for the last two weeks,” Green said. “We had a bye week last week. We had a lot of missed opportunities prior to this game. The big talk was making plays because we were going to get a ton of opportunities and that’s what we did today:”

Robinson would double the lead on offense by scoring on a 1-yard run. Richardson’s fumble extended the lead to three scores. Westinghouse got another interception on the Golden Tornado’s next possession from Taymir O’Neal, which the Bulldogs turned into a 24-yard touchdown run by Taylor to extend the lead to 25 points at the end of the first quarter.

Things didn’t improve in the second quarter. Westinghouse defensive lineman Dante Taylor intercepted a pass that led to a 23-yard touchdown catch by Sincere Smith. By the time the smoke cleared — the Bulldogs added a 70-yard touchdown run from Khalil Taylor with 3:36 left before halftime -- Westinghouse led 39-0 at halftime.

Braylon Littlejohn would score Butler’s only touchdown in the third quarter. Littlejohn hauled in a pass from Schnur and got across the goal line while being crunched by two defenders.

Christy said it was a tough night all around.

“There was a lot going on, we were frustrated from a lot of aspects,” Christy said. “I don’t know what went well for us in any facet of the game. We were all looking at each other as coaches like now what, are we screaming at them? Are we building them up? We had a lot of kids looking at each other looking for what to do.”
