SV’s Ranaweera No. 2 in WPIAL
Seneca Valley junior Lihini Ranaweera finished second in the WPIAL Class 3A Girls Golf Championships held Tuesday at Valley Brook Country Club.
Ranaweera carded a 14-over-par 158, finishing six strokes behind champion Marissa Malosh of South Fayette. She claimed the title for the second straight year.
Ranaweera advances to the PIAA Championships, slated for Oct. 17-18 at the Penn State golf courses. She will be joined there by Raider teammate Madison Sharek, who qualified with a 168 and tied for fifth place.
Freeport junior Lillie Snow qualified for the PIAA 2A tourney by finishing fifth in the WPIAL, carding a 188. Quaker Valley senior Eva Bulger won the WPIAL 2A title for the fourth time with a 165.
In other action:
Moniteau repeated as District 9 champion Monday at Coudersport Country Club. The Warriors’ eam score was 327, beating runner-up Smethport by 10 strokes and third-place Cranberry by 18.
Emma Covert carded a 104 for Moniteau, followed by Mariska Shunk with a 108 and Taylor Voloch a 115.
Knoch senior Mitch Davies and Freeport senior Nate Covey finished among the top 18 in the WPIAL 2A Championships Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club, thus qualifying for the PIAA tourney Oct. 17 at Penn State.
Davies finished 12th with a 164 while Covey tied for 13th with a 165 to become the first boy in school history to advance to the state tournament.
Derry’s Hunter Jurica won the WPIAL title with a 152.
The WPIAL Class 3A boys tournament will be held Thursday at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley.
Mason Nebel and Caleb Oskin both scored twice in Knoch’s 5-0 win over Greensburg Salem.
Orrin Milcic added a goal while Oskin (2), Will Schwalm and Kannon Trofimuk had assists for the Knights (8-6, 8-3).
Knoch 2, Valley 1 — The Knights rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win this Monday game in overtime. Macrina Robb scored both Knoch goals — the first on as free kick — and Hannah Klemm had three saves in goal.
Jackson Read had two goals and an assist, but Seneca Valley dropped its home opener to Baldwin, 5-4. Marshall Hewitt added a goal and assist for the Raiders while Johnathon Leishman scored a goal.
Jack Smelscer had two assists for Seneca Valley, which travels to Upper St. Clair for a 9 p.m. game Thursday.
Both Slippery Rock teams fell to 2-2 with 27-28 losses to Hickory. The Rockets return to action next Tuesday at Wilmington.

Sierra Mack had eight kills and Alyssa Gallagher five as Knoch defeated Lincoln Park, 3-0. Match scores were 25-12, 25-13, 25-10.
Madi Gardner scored 20 points for the Knights (4-3, 6-5).
Clarion 3, A-C Valley 0 — The Falcons slipped to 7-4 with this 25-20, 25-14, 25-21 loss. Lexi Ruckdeschel tallied seven kills, three blocks and 11 digs for A-C Valley while Mackenzie Parks had four kills and 19 digs, Bella Ielase three kills, Jenna Stefanacci 14 assists and nine digs, Keira McVay seven digs.
A-C Valley plays Thursday at Cranberry.
Cranberry 3, Karns City 1 — The Gremlins received nine kills from Ava Fox and 17 assists from Rosalie Carden in this 25-23, 15-25, 23-25, 13-25 loss to the Berries.
Natalie Hess added six kills and Nicole Taylor nine digs.
