Riding for the Cure aims to raise $40k this year
Local charity organization Riding for the Cure has spent 11 years helping cancer patients in Butler County, and organizers plan to continue the mission with more motorcycle-centered camaraderie this year.
According to Lynda Kerr, organization president, the goal is to raise $40,000 by the end of the year, which will bring their 11 years of donation totals to $415,000.
The mission of the organization is to help cancer patients with expenses that insurance does not cover.
“Everybody is affected, one way or another, by cancer,” she said. “We’re a breast cancer ride, but we help all cancer patients. It’s the community helping the community.”
The 2022 annual Breast Cancer Awareness Ride had more than 230 bikes attend, Kerr said.
In addition to the annual ride, Riding for the Cure hosts Bike Nights at the 11th Frame Bar and Grille throughout the summer. Prizes were given away at their final event Sept. 28.
“We (gave away) a $1,000 prize,” Kerr said. “We may do something for October, Breast Cancer Awareness month.”
The “Sunday Funday” event is scheduled for Oct. 23 at Sherwood Lanes in Lyndora. Though logistics are still in the works, Kerr said folks can expect raffles and a bake sale among the festivities.
Kerr said recently the organization was able to help an elderly woman to pay for her cancer treatments.
“Our care person said she had to choose between living, feeding herself and paying expenses and her treatments. She said she was going to stop her treatments. I said, ‘tell her, angels are going to take care of her,’ and so we paid her copays, so she could have treatments,” she said.
Kerr said the best part about the organization is that the donated funds stay in Butler County.
“It’s giving back to the community. This all stays local for our cancer patients needs,” she said.
