GCC recruits 7 students for mascot position

Grove City College has recruited seven students to portray their mascot, Willie the Wolverine, at sporting events for the 2022-23 school year.

The students will remain anonymous and be expected to wear the Wolverine suit for hours at a time, learn cheers and dances, possibly ride a small bike or tricycle, and “other Wolverine requirements to be determined later,” as detailed in the application.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sporting events, Willie was able to make his first full-time appearance Thursday night at the college football game.

“One hundred percent of the people that we talked to, it was very clear that they loved Grove City College, and they wanted to be part of bringing joy to other people,” said athletic director Todd Gibson. “It was just refreshing to be around people that were willing to go that extra step for other people. They're not getting paid; they're just doing it because they want to help.”
