Local golfers advance
Butler junior Hunter Swidzinski placed first at the Section 3-3A golf tournament Monday at Suncrest Golf Course, carding a 1-under par 71.
The effort advances him to the WPIAL semifinal round, to be held Sept. 28 at Champion Lakes Golf Resort in Westmoreland County.
Also making the cut for the Golden Tornado were Parker Worsley (80) and Wyatt Kos (81).
Advancing from Seneca Valley were Lucas Bruns (75), Casey Clawson (77), Payton Brown (81) and Marcos Lopez (81).
Five golfers from Mars are moving on, including Blake Bertolo (74), James Kinghorn (76), Colin Stevenson (78), Will Campbell (78) and Ryan Steigerwald (79).
Class 2A — Knoch’s Mitch Davies had the low round of 75 in Section 1 at Buffalo Golf Course to advance to next Monday’s semifinals at Hannastown Golf Club near Greensburg. Joining him will be teammates Gaspare Porco (80) and Aiden Froedtert (85).
Freeport had four golfers move on — Stephen Evans (79), Nate Covey (81), Jayden Diehl (81) and Matt Ziembicki-Reedy (85).
District 10, Region 2 — Slippery Rock’s Jacob Wolak shot a 75 to win the final region match of the season at Tanglewood Golf Course.
The Rockets carded a 351 as a team to place third out of six teams. Grove City had the top team score with 329. The Eagles won the region team title and will compete in the District 10 team tournament.
Based on his 18-hole average this season, Wolak qualifies for the district’s individual tournament, which begins Sept. 30.

KSAC Mega Match — Karns City’s Chloe Fritch and Joe O'Donnell, along with Moniteau’s Jacob Felsing and Dawson Wallace, each fired a 41 to tie for seventh place at Foxburg Country Club.
Clarion’s Kam Kerle and McKayla Kerle both came in with a 34 to lead the Bobcats to the team victory with 183 strokes.
KC’s Braden Grossman carded a 43 and A-C Valley/Union’s Mikael Bulisco had a 47.
Samantha Miller scored the lone goal of the game as Butler defeated Fox Chapel, 1-0, in section play.
Delaney Yaracs made 10 saves in goal for the Golden Tornado (4-3, 3-2). Butler hosts North Hills Wednesday night.
Freeport 2, Knoch 1 — The Yellowjackets (7-0, 5-0) received goals from Akina Boynton and Crystal Zembrzuski in this victory.
Stats for Knoch (4-3, 2-1) were not available.
Slippery Rock 6, Wilmington 1 — The Rockets received goals from Hannah Plunkard (4), Aiva Reich and Ella Thimons.
Alyssa Gallagher had nine kills while Melissa Karastury totaled nine service points in Knoch’s 3-1 win against Penn Hills.
The Knights (2-3) won by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-23.
Karns City 3, Brookville 0 — The Gremlins swept the Raiders by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-16.
Rosalie Carden tallied five aces, four kills and six assists for KC.
Ava Fox dropped eight kills, Kendall Ritzert dished out 10 assists and Haley Zediker chipped in three kills for the Gremlins.
