Slippery Rock hosts Sharpsville in showdown Friday evening
If you’re a fan of airing the ball out, splash plays, and overall offensive fireworks, this one is for you.
Undefeated Sharpsville (3-0) will make its way into Troy-Alan Stadium Friday evening, aiming to be the first team to knock Slippery Rock (3-0) off this year. Both crews have beaten each of their initial three opponents by at least two touchdowns.
“I’m hoping that we can get on the board as often as we want,” Blue Devils coach Paul Piccirilli said. “I think it’s just going to be a good, old-fashioned shootout.”
If his counterpart, Rockets coach Larry Wendereusz, has his way, it’ll be more of a one-sided affair.
“I’m hoping it’s not too much of an offensive battle,” he said. “I hope that we can do some things to minimize some of their stuff.”
Sharpsville’s triggerman, Caullin Summers, has flung the football for 794 yards and seven touchdowns thus far. His targets include senior Garen Levis (17 catches-308 yards), Killian Whelan (7-171), and Blaze Campbell (5-112).
“As our quarterback goes, we go,” Piccirilli said. “He’s made some plays that were unbelievable. He’s one of those rare athletes you get.”
Summers is also a threat to take off, as paces his squad on the ground with 245 yards on 34 carries.
“Their quarterback is leading Mercer County in almost every stat,” Wendereusz said. “We’re gonna have to be ready to go to stop them. They give us so many formations that we’ve just got to be very sound with what they’re doing and not get mesmerized.”
Slippery Rock will try to make sure that Summers doesn’t have as much success as Mercyhurst Prep quarterback David Bahm, who burnt the defense for 119 yards on the ground in Week 2, mostly on broken plays.
“We actually put ourselves in a better spot at the end of (that) game,” Wendereusz said. “We made an adjustment with how we were aligning to things. We mirrored Brett (Galcik) on their quarterback for a while. We’re hoping it’ll be a little easier to keep this gentleman in the pocket.”
On the flip side, the Rockets’ William Mokel has thrown for 718 yards and six strikes. One-third of those touchdowns fell into the hands of senior John Sabo, who’s back this week from an injury suffered during an acrobatic grab two weeks ago.
Junior Sal Mineo will also be suiting up after spending some time away from the team. He came back last week, piled up 73 receiving yards on three catches, and adds to the unit’s arsenal of weapons.
“We’ve just got to do what we do and just take what the defense is going to give us,” Wendereusz said. “If we do that, then sooner or later, we’re going to get a big one.”
“It’s very difficult to keep a quarterback like they have in check — that can run and pass,” Piccirilli said. “Same on our end, though. We have the same dilemma for them, hopefully.”
The Blue Devils will likely be missing senior running back-safety Colby Johnson, who was banged up in Sharpsville’s 41-27 road win over Reynolds last week. Piccirilli will have a better idea Thursday on if some other players nursing injuries will be able to go.
North Catholic (2-1)
at Highlands (3-0)
7 p.m., Friday
The Trojans were shut out by Aliquippa last week, 26-0; Highlands remained undefeated with a 28-20 win at Chartiers Valley.
North was held to negative yardage by the Quips. Junior QB Jason Siket has completed just nine of 33 passes for 141 yards this season with one TD and three INTs. The offense is paced by RBs Jack Fennell (21 carries for 171 yards and two TDs) and Samir Ware (25-100-2). Sophomore DL Brady O'Hara leads North in tackles with 13, including three for loss.
Luke Bombalski rushed for 253 yards and a pair of TDs for Highlands last week.
This is the first Greater Allegheny Conference game of the season for both teams.
Saint Marys (3-0)
at Karns City (1-2)
7 p.m., Friday
The Dutchmen clobbered Kane last week, 30-0; Karns City picked up its first win, a 28-0 shutout of Ridgway.
Saint Marys senior QB Charlie Coudriet has passed for 517 yards, eight TDs and three INTs. He also leads the team in rushing with 256 yards and four scores.
Gremlins' starting QB Eric Booher played with a cast on his right (throwing) wrist last week and did not attempt a pass. KC dominated the game on the ground, though, piling up 335 rushing yards with Nathan Hess (2), Cooper Coyle and Booher combining for four TDs. KC's defense intercepted three Ridgway passes.
Saint Marys won last year's meeting with KC, 35-28, with Charlie Coudriet's older brother, Christian, passing for 407 yards and five TDs.
Union/A-C Valley (1-2)
at Brockway (2-1)
7 p.m., Friday
Union/A-C Valley lost its second straight game last week, 43-6, to Central Clarion; Brockway crushed host Coudersport, 70-16.
The Falcon Knights surrendered five rushing TDs against Central Clarion. QB Brody Dittman has completed 18 of 48 passes this season for 221 yards, three TDs and four INTs.
Rovers' sophomore QB Brayden Fox has passed for 882 yards and 10 TDs this season. While the Rovers are averaging 317 passing yards per game, they are running for an average of just 103. Brockway has a football co-op with DuBois Central Catholic.
Knoch (0-3)
at Southmoreland (1-2)
7 p.m., Friday
The Knights were beaten at Beaver Falls, 44-6, last week; the Scotties downed non-conference foe Derry, 28-14, for their first win on the season.
Knoch took a bit of a step back in the decisive loss against the Tigers. That defeat, along with their opening trip-up against Hampton, bookended a competitive effort at Indiana in Week 2. Over those three games, the Knights gave up 124 points compared to pinning up 37 themselves.
Southmoreland never trailed in the triumph over the Trojans. Junior quarterback Kadin Keefer went 11-of-15 for 154 yards and a touchdown strike. He added a score on the ground, adding to senior Tray Whetsel’s pair of rushing surges.
Freeport (3-0)
at Armstrong (2-1)
7 p.m., Friday
The Yellowjackets easily handled Quaker Valley, 61-7, last Friday; Armstrong dispatched New Castle, 49-13.
The 54-point victory was Freeport’s most decisive win since it beat West Shamokin, 67-6, in Oct. 2011. Senior quarterback Gavin Croney connected with Brady Stivenson, Ben Lane, and Colton Otterman for TDs in the first quarter alone. The signal-caller accounted for five scores in total, including one on the ground.
The River Hawks boast senior quarterback Cadin Olsen, whose average completion goes for 14.4 yards. He threw for 201 yards his last time out, which pushed him into the top spot in career passing in Armstrong County.
Rochester (1-1)
at Summit Academy (1-2)
12 p.m., Saturday
The Knights put an end to a 14-game losing streak by beating Springdale, 18-14, on the road. Rochester put away New Brighton, 60-13, on the road.
After dropping their first two contests — against New Castle and Leechburg — by a combined 118-0 margin, Summit Academy is doing something it hasn’t done in nearly three years; looking to put together a win streak. The team’s last win came against Valley in Oct. 2019.
Sophomore running back Antonio Laure starred in the Rams’ blowout win, rushing for 66 yards on 11 totes and punching the football in three times. Along with senior quarterback Parker Lyons’ two ground scores, Carter Mason and Amaree Curry also registered rushing touchdowns.
Moniteau (1-2)
at Brookville (0-3)
7 p.m., Friday
Moniteau picked up its first win, at Cameron County, with a 20-12 decision; Brookville gave Keystone a fight at home, but fell short, 20-19.
The Warriors are playing their second conference matchup of the year. Their attack is led by junior David Dessicino and senior Hunter Stalker. The latter ran for 181 yards in the team’s opener.
For the Raiders, sophomore quarterback Easton Belfiore completed 50% of his passes last week, going for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wideout Brayden Kunselman had 100 receiving yards and two scores.
