2nd death reported from Route 8 crash
State police have released more information on the fatal crash Friday, Sept. 9, involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Route 8 and Branchton Road, Slippery Rock Township.
According to state police, crews were dispatched to the scene at 4 p.m. Friday for a crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV.
Multiple officials confirmed as of Saturday, Sept. 10, that the motorcycle’s rider, Gary L. Redmond, 68, of Franklin, and his passenger, Jeannie M. Summers, 51, of Slippery Rock, had died as a result of the crash.
Redmond had been pronounced dead at the scene by a representative from the Butler County Coroner’s Office.
Summers was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m., according to Mercer County Coroner John Libonati.
Libonati said she died as a result of blunt force trauma suffered from the crash.
Police said Redmond was riding his 2008 Yamaha motorcycle north on Route 8 when he encountered a 2009 Dodge Caliber driven by Kelsey E. Kasper, 23, of Slippery Rock.
“(Caliber) attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Route 8 from Branchton Road,” said police in a news release. “(The Caliber) proceeded onto Route 8 without yielding to (the motorcycle) and as a result, (the motorcycle) struck (the SUV), causing significant disabling damage.”
According to police, Kasper was uninjured; however, the statement did not indicate whether she would be cited or charged in relation to the crash.
The crash becomes the latest in a long series of lethal and serious crashes at the same intersection, including a similar motorcycle crash on Sept. 2 after which the rider was hospitalized.
In April, the site saw three vehicle crashes — one of them fatal — and a number of other crashes have occurred at the intersection during at least the past two decades. In 2003, five members of a North Carolina family died when their Dodge Neon and a tractor-trailer collided.
