Scoop column
Going 7-for-11 is great if we're talking batting average, but it doesn't make the cut when picking winners of high school football games.
My 10-1 start to the season has dissolved into a 17-5 effort through two weeks. But there's no time to sulk for another full slate of games is challenging me this week.
I'm determined to get back on track. Let's fly into Week 3.
Brashear at Butler — The Bulls have surrendered over 40 points in lopsided losses to Baldwin and Wheeling Park. That doesn't bode well with a potent Golden Tornado offense waiting to strike.
Score: Butler 36-19
Canon-McMillan at Seneca Valley — SV had breakdowns on both offense and defense last week in a loss to Peters Township. I'm banking on a cleaner performance from the Raiders this week.
Score: SV 27-15
Mars at Blackhawk — A struggling offense has held the Cougars back over the first two games. Mars, on the other hand, has had no such trouble finding the end zone.
Score: Mars 38-10
Knoch at Beaver Falls — Jaren Brickner is the quarterback for the Tigers. He had a great 2021 with over 3,000 passing and rushing yards. He'll be the difference in this one.
Score: Beaver Falls 30-21
Quaker Valley at Freeport — My pick of Freeport last week may have been considered an upset special by some, but the 'Jackets handled the Gladiators rather easily. They'll deal with the Quakers in similar fashion.
Score: Freeport 25-11
Aliquippa at North Catholic — The Quips are defending WPIAL and PIAA champions. I don't often pick against North, but this is just too stiff a test, even for the talented Trojans.
Score: Aliquippa 31-16
Ridgway at Karns City — The Gremlins are an angry bunch these days....an 0-2 start will do that to a team. They will find the winning formula this week at home.
Score: Karns City 35-8
Moniteau at Cameron County — The Warriors are another team yet to taste victory. It will require a four-hour round trip, but they earn a win Friday.
Score: Moniteau 16-12
Greenville at Slippery Rock — The Rockets just have too much firepower for the Trojans, plain and simple.
Score: Slippery Rock 27-6
Union/A-C Valley at Central Clarion — The Falcon Knights are licking their wounds after Keystone dealt them a 36-point loss. They'll play better this week, but it won't be enough against a strong Central Clarion team.
Score: Central Clarion 24-16
Summit Academy at Springdale — A pair of 0-2 teams that have struggled to score. The Dynamos will break out of their funk.
Score: Springdale 29-8
Scoop was forced to eat a big piece of humble pie after last week's performance.
