Butler hopes to rebound from troubling loss at Meadville
BUTLER TWP — A little banged up, a little angry.
That is an apt description of the Butler football team as the Golden Tornado prepare to host Brashear of the Pittsburgh City League at 7 p,.m. Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
The Golden Tornado (1-1) are coming off a 21-14 loss at Meadville, a game in which they fell behind 21-0 in the first half.
“We had a bad week of practice leading up to that game, but we didn’t practice that well before the Shaler game, either,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “We figured, maybe this is one of those teams that struggles in practice, but turns it on come game night.
“That wasn’t the case this time. We came out really flat at Meadville and didn’t play well at all. I yelled at them (team) pretty good at halftime. We responded, but it was too late.”
Already battling preseason injuries, Butler was hit by two more key ones Friday. Veteran two-way linemen Markeis Frazier and Ethan Babay were out of action. Babay injured a knee during the game and will be sidelined two to four weeks. Frazier developed a knee issue in the days leading up to the Meadville game and his immediate status is unknown.
Butler did get cornerback-receiver Ian Wilson back last week and Christy is hopeful receiver-defensive back Braylon Littlejohn — out with a hand injury — will see his first action this week.
“We’re hoping ... It may be one more week yet, but there’s a chance we’ll be getting Braylon back for Brashear,” the coach said.
The Bulls have been having issues of their own. Brashear (0-2) began the season with losses of 47-17 to Baldwin and 42-12 to Wheeling Park. Neither of its two Division 1 college recruits at linebacker — Ta’Mere Robinson (Penn State) and Kameron Cheatom (Akron) — will be available for the Butler game.
Robinson remains out indefinitely while recovering from a knee injury. Cheatom suffered an ankle injury last week.
“We don’t have much experience back to start with,” Brashear coach Andrew Moore said. “We’ll miss those two guys. We only have four lettermen back who started last year, two on each side of the ball.”
The Bulls do have a weapon in running back Shawn Solomon, who combines power with speed out of the backfield.
“I consider him the best running back in Western Pennsylvania,” Moore declared. “He can break tackles and has the speed to get away. He hasn’t had any concrete offers yet, but he’s got the attention of a lot of Division 1 schools.”
Brashear’s quarterback, junior Donovan Meadows, is in his first year playing the position. He was a wide receiver as a sophomore and played on the offensive line at another school his freshman year. He is 5-foot-10 and weighs 165 pounds.
While Christy is restructuring his offensive line — Andrew Baker, Matthew Reese and Colin Leitem will see time while Babay and Frazier are out — he’s also prepping to defend a fast team.
“They not only have speed, they are bigger than we are,” Christy said of Brashear. “We have to play a disciplined game and not let them get loose.”
Right guard Keegan Bracken is Butler’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. Christy said Brock Popovich had another strong game up front as well.
Linebackers Cooper McTighe and JunJun Andrada — the Tornado leaders with 17 and 16 solo tackles through two games, respectively — made a number of stops against Meadville.
“Our defensive line tied up blockers and enabled those guys to make plays,” Christy said.
Mac Schnur has thrown for 402 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions through two games. Dashawn Cox has 189 yards rushing and nine catches for 155 yards offensively. Ayden Davis has seven catches for 87 yards, David Graef five catches for 87.
“Butler’s team brings a lot of energy,” Moore said. “They make splash plays on offense and run to the ball on defense. That’s a well-coached group. We need to put four solid quarters together against them.”
This is the first football meeting between the two schools.
