3 Butler Area schools get healthy snack grant
Three Butler Area School District elementary schools will receive more than $65,000 after being included in a plan to feed students healthy snacks when class is in session.
On Wednesday, Governor Tom Wolf announced a total $7 million grant for 266 elementary schools nationwide to implement fresh fruit and vegetable snacks into the school day. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provided the funding with the goal of increasing consumption of fresh foods and encouraging good eating habits.
“Healthy foods are essential to children’s growth, learning, development, and well-being, and this funding will help more students access nutritious food while school is in session,” Governor Wolf said in a release. “The fresh fruits and vegetables offered through these grants will help students establish healthy eating habits, grow stronger, and stay focused and engaged in the classroom.”
According to the state’s Department of Education website, McQuistion was allotted $34,580 in funds, Broad Street received $14,910 and Emily Brittain received $16,730.
