Butler County's great daily newspaper

Always seeking perfection

Winning 10 of 11 games is a great start to the season. That was my effort last week, but my goal is always perfection.

I have mulled over this week's high school football games and there are some tough choices to make, but this bird is ready for the challenge.

Let's see how I do in Week 2.

Butler at Meadville — The Bulldogs feature a run-heavy offensive scheme and the Golden Tornado are still dealing with some injuries on the defensive side of the ball.

Score: Meadville 28-23

Peters Township at Seneca Valley — Both teams are not short on talent, but SV has a lot more experience and that will be the difference.

Score: SV 26-17

Knoch at Indiana — The Indians seem to have made an impressive switch from running the ball almost exclusively last year to utilizing the arm of quarterback Trevor Smith in 2022. And as you all know, taking to the air is my favorite pastime.

Score: Indiana 27-13

New Castle at Mars — Head coaches Eric Kasperowicz (Planets) and Stacy Robinson (Red Hurricanes) both won their first games with new programs last week. Mars, however, had a much stiffer test in its defeat of Montour.

Score: Mars 25-20

Shady Side Academy at North Catholic — SSA did not play last week. Getting rid of those first-game jitters and still winning against North is a tall task. Too tall in this case.

Score: North Catholic 30-17

Freeport at South Allegheny — The 'Jackets gave up some long drives to Indiana last week, but surrendered just eight points. I see a similar performance getting them to 2-0.

Score: Freeport 21-14

Karns City at Redbank Valley — The Gremlins will try to put Week 1's disappointment behind them. New Bethlehem is a tough place to get back on track, with the defending state runner-up Bulldogs awaiting KC's arrival. The Gremlins, however, don't often start a season 0-2.

Score: Karns City 23-22

Elk County Catholic at Moniteau — For the second straight week, Moniteau encounters a team from Elk County. The Warriors' trip to Saint Marys last week yielded a frustrating night on the gridiron. This time, the road trip and a loss will belong to their opponent.

Score: Moniteau 18-12

Keystone at Union/A-C Valley — This will be the first conference test of the season for the Falcon Knights. They'll pass with flying colors.

Score: Union/A-C Valley 33-14

Mercyhurst Prep at Slippery Rock — The Rockets' red glare will be too much for the visiting Lakers.

Score: Slippery Rock 38-9

Leechburg at Summit Academy — This Saturday matinee in Herman will feature the Blue Devils in a starring role.

Score: Leechburg 35-8

Scoop is flying high with confidence after his opening-week performance.
