Butler man sentenced to prison on child pornography charges

A 65-year-old Butler man was sentenced Thursday to serve up to six years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of possession of child pornography.

Jay W. Flagg was sentenced to serve 36 to 72 months in prison and a concurrent term of 120 months of probation by Judge Timothy McCune in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Butler City police filed the charge following an incident in September last year.

Flagg was not found to be a sexually violent predator in that case, but he is a Tier 2 sexual offender under Megan’s Law due to a conviction on charges of sexual abuse of children, dissemination of photos and possession of child pornography in 2017. Tier 2 offenders are required to register with state police for 25 years.

On Sept. 3, 2021, a state parole agent noticed a black flash drive sticking out from under Flagg’s mattress while was conducting a home check.

The agent contact city police, who reported that Flagg admitted to having more than 100 images of child porn saved on the flash drive.

The flash drive contained 810 images, his public defender said when Flagg pleaded guilty in February. His sentencing was delayed at that time so he could undergo a sexual offender assessment.
