Post office bill moves forward

Andrew Williams was an officer in the 63rd Pa. Infantry during the Civil War.

A bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, to name the Butler Post Office building after Civil War hero and community leader Andrew Gomer Williams has cleared an initial hurdle.

Kelly announced the bill unanimously passed the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

The bill will now move to the House floor and awaits a final vote.

The building that houses the Butler Post Office is at the intersection of Main and Wayne streets in downtown Butler.

Williams was an officer in the 63rd Pa. Infantry during the Civil War. Williams went on to serve in the state House and Senate following his involvement in the Civil War.
