Slippery Rock University clinched a berth in the upcoming PSAC Tournament with a 9-1 victory over Mercyhurst in the second game of a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park Saturday afternoon.
The teams split two games against each other Friday in Erie and the Lakers overwhelmed The Rock, 13-4, in Saturday’s first game.
But a five-run bottom of the second inning set the tone in Game 2 for SRU.
The Rock tallied just six hits in the win, with Joel Spishock’s 2-for-3 effort, including a double, leading the way. SRU benefitted from six walks issued by Mercyhurst pitching.
Seneca Valley graduate Ethan Edkins pitched a complete game and improved his record this season to 6-0 by allowing just the one run on two hits while striking out six.
SRU will be making its first appearance in the eight-team, double-elimination PSAC tournament for the first time since 2018. The event runs Wednesday through Saturday at Critchfield Park.
