Man accused of shooting at his home, burning roommate’s car
Police are accusing a Clay Township man of taking, vandalizing and burning his roommate’s vehicle, before he used a shotgun to shoot at his own house.
State police filed charges Monday against Brent D. Hilton Jr., 54, including felony counts of firing a gun into a building and arson, as well as misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Hilton has been arraigned and placed in Butler County Prison on $75,000 bond.
According to charging documents, police were dispatched at 11:32 a.m. Saturday to a home on Queen Junction Road. Police said when they arrived at the scene, they found a damaged home, a scorched vehicle and Hilton’s roommate. Hilton was not at the home.
“I observed fresh blood on the screen door and on the siding of the house,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. “The exterior northern wall of the residence had numerous holes from the top of the first floor through the top of the second floor, which were consistent with the impact made by buckshot from a 12-gauge shotgun.”
Police said they talked with Hilton’s roommate, who owned the damaged vehicle. He told police he is in the process of moving out, but he was asleep in his second-story bedroom all morning.
“At approximately 5 a.m., Hilton began playing loud music and (later) started shooting his gun outside at approximately 9 a.m.,” police said. “(The roommate) confirmed that his bedroom was located near the impact points of the rounds.”
Police said they also had found shotgun shells in both the yard and driveway.
A neighbor, who police said witnessed Hilton’s actions, called police after the shooting began. The neighbor told police Hilton was screaming and appeared to be stumbling around drunk.
“He went into the garage to retrieve a hammer and start(ed) hitting a gray truck,” police said. “After using the hammer, Hilton attempted to light the truck on fire by igniting a green gas can under the front-right tire.”
Police said during their investigation they found damage on all sides of the vehicle and fire damage in front of the right side of the truck above a green gas can that was on the ground.
Police said they searched for Hilton, but did not find him by the time charges were filed. Hilton was arrested and jailed sometime Saturday, according to court documents.
Hilton is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 3 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
