Big finish for Gremlins

Softball team’s 6-run sixth inning puts away Punxsutawney

Ashley Fox had a pair of doubles and four RBI Wednesday and Karns City used a big sixth inning to defeat Punxsutawney, 11-4, in softball action.

The Lady Gremlins had a 5-4 lead entering that sixth frame before scoring six times to break it open.

Sarra Patton had a double and two singles as part of Karns City’s 13-hit attack. Rossi McMillen added a double and single, Ally Walker two singles and a pair of runs scored.

Marra Patton went the distance on the mound for the win, striking out three and scattering eight hits.

Baseball

Central Catholic pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 4-3 win over Butler, handing the Golden Tornado (6-1, 3-1) their first loss of the season.

Kyle Yost had a double, single and two runs scored, Madden Clement a pair of singles and two RBI for Butler, which was limited to six hits. Mac Schnur, the Tornado’s fourth pitcher of the day, took the loss despite striking out three in two innings of work.

Karns City 12, Brockway 2 — In need of a boost at the plate, the Gremlins (3-2) received it against the host Rovers.

Mallick Metcalfe went 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs. Braden Grossman cleared the bases with another double in support of winning pitcher, Michael Neff, who pitched a complete game.

Boys Volleyball

Butler fell to 4-3 via a sweep at Hempfield.

Cam Ray totaled 13 assists and Coleton Welter six kills for the Golden Tornado, who lost by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-17.

Tyler Figlioli added 16 digs for Butler, which visits Seneca Valley Tuesday.

Track and Field

Moniteau’s girls defeated Sharpsville, 103-46. Hannah Burgoon brought home first-place finishes in the 1,600-meter run, 800 and 3,200.

The Warriors swept the field events.
