Police: Drugs found in man’s drawers
The proof, police said, was in the pants, the underpants.
On Monday night, police arrested R.C. Wright Jr., 34, of Duquesne, and took him to the Butler city police station, where they said Wright hid suspected drugs in his mouth and underwear.
"He was requested to drop his boxers to the floor," said the investigating detective in charging documents. "When he did so, a rectangular white brick of suspected heroin hit the ground with enough force to bounce and skid across the floor halfway."
Wright was arraigned Monday morning by District Judge Joseph Nash, who assigned him a $250,000 bond holding him in Butler County Prison.
Wright is charged with two felony counts of drug delivery, one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor count of tampering with evidence.
According to the affidavit, Butler city police worked jointly with the Butler County Drug Task Force to follow a familiar vehicle at about 6:45 p.m. as it drove along Route 8.
Police said the vehicle, a gold-colored Buick sedan, appeared to be speeding, despite rainy weather causing slick road conditions. Police said the Buick, on multiple other occasions, had been seen frequenting areas of Butler known for drug activity.
Police followed the vehicle and watched as it made a signaled turn only about 20 to 30 feet before the intersection; law requires signaling be done at least 300 feet before. Police initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle continued driving until it reached a driveway on West North Street.
Wright was in the passenger seat, but both he and the driver were asked by police to step out of the vehicle and talk separately. A drug K-9 unit was then requested.
"(A K-9 officer) did run his K-9 partner around the vehicle, and Rico, of his own volition, climbed into the open window of the vehicle," detectives said. "According to the (K-9 officer), Rico then provided a positive alert on the front passenger seat where Wright had been seated."
Police had the vehicle towed until they could secure a search warrant, and took both men to the city station.
"Prior to his escort into the station, it was determined that Wright had somehow picked his left handcuff, and his entire demeanor had changed," detectives said.
According to police, Wright was stripped down in the booking area to search his clothes. Police said after the suspected heroin fell from his boxers, he reacted and resisted officers.
“Wright dove forward to try to recover the suspected narcotics,” police said. “He actively continued to fight with us, even attempting to lurch toward the door to the booking room.”
Police said they then noticed a ball-shaped object in Wright’s mouth, and he then resisted their attempts to remove it.
“He was eventually forced to spit out what appeared to be a paper towel with suspected crack cocaine inside,” police said. “His mouth was entirely coated in residue as well.”
Wright is scheduled to appear April 18 for a preliminary hearing before District Judge William Fullerton.
