North’s Scheller back in final

North Catholic senior tennis star Nicolas Scheller won three matches Tuesday to advance to the WPIAL Class 2A singles championship, scheduled for noon Wednesday in Wexford.

Scheller easily dispatched Ringgold’s Bryan Nguyen and Montour’s John Rohrkaste with pro-set scores of 10-0 and 10-1 in the first round and quarterfinals, respectively. He took the semifinal match from Mars’ Josh Dunham, 6-2, 6-1.

Scheller will face Quaker Valley’s Mike Sirianni in the district final for the second straight season. Scheller defeated him last year, 6-1, 6-1.

Dunham reached the tournament’s final four by beating Hampton’s Ethen Oh and Quaker Valley’s Will Sirianni.

Dunham will square off against Thomas Jefferson’s Drew Dimidjian Wednesday for third place and a berth in the state tournament.

Also in action Tuesday was North’s Brody Golla, who fell in the quarterfinals to Mike Sirianni.

Mars’ Luke Raymundo lost a first-round match to Jackson Gillespie.

Butler 4, North Hills 1 — The Golden Tornado’s Collin Gahagan and Clark Stanton won at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, as Butler rolled past the Indians.

Softball

Autumn Powell hit a three-run home run to power Freeport to a 4-2 home win over Greensburg Salem.

Maddie Shanta and Aimee Heasley both had two hits for the Yellowjackets (2-2, 1-1) while Jenna Selker doubled.

Sydney Selker pitched all seven innings for the win while allowing just one hit with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Gionnah Ruffner singled for Greensburg Salem’s lone hit.

Baseball

Trey Wagner was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Mars’ 6-5 section victory over host Plum.

Matt Mroz earned the pitching win, striking out a pair in 1 2/3 innings pitched for the Planets (6-2, 4-1).

The teams will face each other again Wednesday at the Mars Athletic Complex.

Track and Field

Both Freeport teams fell in a Section 4-3A meet at home to Kiski Area, the boys by a score of 103-47 and the girls losing 119½-30½.
