Winstead’s double rallies Mars past North

Down to its last strike, Mars received a three-run double from Chase Winstead in the top of the seventh inning, lifting the Planets to a 3-1 baseball win Friday over North Catholic.

The teams combined for just four hits.

Kyle Haddad got the pitching win after allowing one run in two innings of relief.

Ty Garver, Ben Astbury and Thomas McLaren worked five scoreless innings to begin the game for the Planets (5-2).

Tommy Koroly highlighted North’s pitching effort with four scoreless innings of relief. The Trojans fell to 2-3.

Freeport 7, Kiski Area 2 — Noah Fryer went six innings on the mound, allowing no earned runs on just one hit to spark the Yellowjackets (2-3).

Zach Clark went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI in the win. Jack Smetak added a pair of doubles.

Softball

Through five innings Friday, Seneca Valley and Norwin had yet to break through. After the Knights plated a run in the top half of the sixth, the Raiders’ Lexi Hames reached base on a walk and Maddie Gross belted a homer that ended up giving SV a 2-1 home victory.

Hames also contributed in a large way on the mound, pitching all seven innings and fanning 11 batters. She walked only one.

Seneca Valley (2-2, 1-2) next travels to Hempfield on Monday.

Karns City 21, Union 2 — The Gremlins pushed 11 runs across in the initial frame and rolled to a decisive victory as six different batters recorded at least one RBI.

Rossi McMillen won both hurdle events as the Karns City girls track and field team won a dual meet, 75-65, against Cranberry on Thursday.
