Petrolia woman charged with stealing from man under her care at nursing facility

State police have charged a Petrolia woman with stealing an elderly man’s debit card and using it to obtain more than $3,500 shortly before his death.

Jamie S. Roxberry, 28, was charged Monday with 12 felony counts of identity theft, 12 felony counts of unauthorized device access and two misdemeanor counts of theft. Police said she continued to use the man’s card for more than two weeks after his death.

Roxberry was released on $30,000 unsecured bond following her arraignment by District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Monday.

According to charging documents, Roxberry made her first purchases Feb. 9 using the debit card of Chicora Medical Center resident Russell Croll, who died Feb. 10.

In the affidavit, police said Roxberry used the card at businesses throughout Butler and Armstrong counties to purchase, among other things, household and personal items, children’s clothing, groceries and toys. She also made cash withdrawals at local ATM machines.

Police said Roxberry continued using the card, accumulating total expenses of $3,557 over 12 fraudulent transactions. According to police, the final transaction was Feb. 27.

According to police, Roxberry worked for Realogic, a third-party staffing agency with both part-time and full-time nurses and nurses’ assistants.

The center belongs to the Quality Life Services network of facilities. On its behalf, chief quality officer Mary Susan Yurek said they reached out to police immediately after being informed of the alleged theft. She said the company will continue cooperating with police for the investigation.

“Chicora puts the highest priority on the personal safety of its residents, and the security of their property,” Yurek said. “We have policies in place that guide our response when situations like this arise, which include doing a complete investigation and notifying all required governmental agencies.”

Police said Roxberry’s employment gave her access to Croll’s room.

Police said Roxberry confessed to removing Croll’s credit card from his room at the medical center and using it without Croll’s permission to make fraudulent purchases.

A preliminary hearing for Roxberry is scheduled for May 31 before Stoughton.
