Pittsburgh woman accused in vehicle break-ins in Jackson
A combination of surveillance footage and cellphone tracking led to fraud and identity theft charges against a Pittsburgh woman.
Jackson Township police filed charges last week against Lashae K. King, 30, who they claim used credit cards stolen during multiple vehicle break-ins Jan. 12 in the township.
King was arraigned March 17 by District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz. She is charged with felony counts of device fraud, criminal use of a phone, receiving stolen property, criminal conspiracy and unlicensed gun carrying. She also is charged with four of each misdemeanor count of identity theft and possessing stolen property.
King was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bond, which she has since posted.
According to charging documents, police were called Jan. 12 to vehicle break-ins on Millstream Lane and Tollgate School Road.
“With over 300 houses in the area, the police department was informed that multiple residents had home surveillance of two black males attempting to enter vehicles parked outside of homes,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.
Police said a 9mm pistol, wallets, credit and debit cards, purses and other miscellaneous items were stolen from multiple vehicles.
According to the affidavit, while police investigated the thefts, some of the cards were being used, starting around 11 a.m. Police later received surveillance videos from 10 stores where some of the stolen credit cards were used.
The stores were located in and around Pittsburgh, and at each one, police said the security footage showed King wearing a white winter coat and winter hat. Police said King’s husband and another unidentified man had accompanied her in the car and to some of the stores.
According to police, King used the stolen cards interchangeably to buy $50 Visa gift cards, usually two at a time. Police estimate the total stolen amount at about $759.
Police also noted that at a Speedway in McKees Rocks, King used a food stamp card to buy snacks moments before trying to use stolen cards to buy more gift cards. Police said they later received a warrant for the state Department of Human Services to uncover the owner of the food stamp card.
“The search warrant was returned with one registered owner, Lashae King, and she is also the only person permitted to use this card,” police said.
Police said as they collected surveillance videos from the various stores, they also received a warrant for cellular data, and they received help from the FBI cellular analysis survey team.
“The locations consisted of the area of the housing plans in Jackson Township and majority of the stores reported,” police said.
Police said they also focused on the vehicle, a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, which they found had a suspended registration due to insurance cancellation. Jackson Township police asked Pittsburgh police to stop the vehicle for that reason. They also asked for the vehicle to be impounded, so it could be searched.
Monroeville police and Wilkins Township police stopped and towed the vehicle Feb. 28, and, on March 1, Jackson Township police received a warrant to search the vehicle.
"We were able to locate a firearm under the driver’s seat, which was confirmed to be stolen from Florida,“ police said.
Police also found gift cards, transaction receipts, the vehicle’s title and other items pertinent to the case.
As of Wednesday, King alone has been charged in relation to the Jackson Township vehicle break-ins. She is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing March 29 before Marcinkiwicz.
