Butler’s Kriess wins WPIBL title
Butler’s Harley Kriess won the WPIBL girls individual championship Thursday in Belle Vernon, defeating Leah McCandless of Burrell 178-174 in the title game.
Kriess defeated Kali Siegel of Norwin 189-158 in the semifinals after knocking off Mareana Pilyih of Plum 190-185 in the quarterfinal round. She also bowled a 245 during the tournament, the second highest score of the day. Pilyih rolled a 247.
Kriess had a 618 series to finish fourth in qualifying. Freeport’s Julia Cummings was ninth with a 608 series, including games of 213 and 203.
Butler’s Kelsee McConnell was 12th with a 595 series, including a 234 game. Freeport’s Mackensie Livingston was 19th with a 211-559, Butler’s Natalie Coughenour 20th with a 205-557.
Boys Basketball
Jacob Wolak scored 14 points, but was the lone Slippery Rock player in double figures Thursday night as the Rockets dropped a 46-37 decision to rival Grove City in the District 10 boys basketball playoffs at Sharon High School.
Slippery Rock scored only 25 points in the first three quarters and trailed by seven entering the fourth period. Dylan Gordon scored nine points for the Rockets.
Grove City (14-8) was led by Landon Haggart with 13 points. Nathan Greer added eight. The Eagles move on to play Oil City in the district semifinals Tuesday.
