Lady Raiders eliminated by rival NA
WEXFORD — Coming back to defeat defending WPIAL and PIAA champion North Allegheny on its home floor was a task in itself.
Turnovers and the Tigers’ outside shooting made it an insurmountable one.
Seneca Valley trailed NA 30-22 at halftime of Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 6A girls basketball quarterfinal playoff before junior Cam Phillips drained three treys in the first two and a half minutes of the second half as NA’s lead swelled to 39-22.
The Tigers would go on to hit four more 3-pointers by the end of the game, ending the Raiders’ season with a 65-48 decision.
Four NA players reached double figures in points, led by junior guard Jasmine Timmerson’s 17.
“We did our best to hold her down, but their other players stepped up,” said SV coach Dorothea Epps. “I give them credit. They did what they needed to do.
“They were hitting shots and when it’s coming from four or five different players, that’s tough to defend.”
Compounding SV’s frustration were four turnovers before their first shot attempt in the second half.
The Raiders (11-11) held several slim leads in the first quarter, the last coming when Emerson Peffer’s bucket put SV up 10-9 with 2:15 left.
The Tigers (21-2) soon moved ahead for good on Emma Fischer’s trey, one of 11 on the night for NA.
Phillips contributed 13 points for the Tigers, Fischer had 12 and Taylor Rawls 11.
SV senior forward Olivia West was stellar in defeat, scoring 29 points. Her basket with 13 seconds left in the game put her at 1,000 for her varsity career, making her just the second girls player in SV history to do so.
In three games against NA this season, West scored 90 of her team’s 145 points.
“She’s a beast out there,” Epps said of West. “And she did a lot of it while being double- and triple-teamed. It’s going to be tough to see her go.”
The Raiders were 11-5 after 16 games, but they end the season with six straight losses.
“We were ready (tonight) and there wasn’t a lack of confidence,” said Epps, “but you have to prove it on the court.”
The Raiders won just three games last year.
“I’m not satisfied,” added Epps. “We had several games late in the season where we let leads slip away.”
NA coach Spencer Stefko was unavailable for comment.
