Clearfield Twp. man waives hearings, no longer without bond

CHICORA — A Clearfield Township man, facing charges in five cases from a November night that ended with his own stabbing, received a bond after being held without one since his arrest in December.

Transported from Butler County Prison, Kurt J. Leinenbach, 35, appeared Tuesday for multiple preliminary hearings before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

Leinenbach waived his right to preliminary hearings in all cases, but before that, public defender Michael McFarland and Assistant District Attorney David Beichner agreed to set a combined bond at $50,000 with the condition that if it were posted, he would be placed on house arrest.

Leinenbach has been held without bond since his arraignment Dec. 3, shortly after he was released from the hospital from stab wounds suffered during an alleged string of criminal activity throughout the day and night of Nov. 17.

McFarland also successfully asked prosecutors to drop one set of charges related to the theft of a pickup truck. Before its withdrawal Tuesday, Leinenbach had been charged in a sixth case that shared identical charges and information, related to the alleged theft of a pickup truck.

According to multiple sets of charging documents, police said Leinenbach first choked and threatened his girlfriend at her Chicora home, before fleeing the scene. Police said later that evening, Leinenbach was arrested under suspicion of DUI, and he was later released to his mother.

Police said while driving back to his mother's home, Leinenbach fled from her vehicle and stole a pickup truck, which he then used to return to his girlfriend's home.

Police said Leinenbach broke into the woman's home through a window and again threatened her and then attacked her children, who were in the home. Police said the children collectively fought off Leinenbach, at which point he was stabbed and left the home.

Police said Leinenbach was later found bleeding and unconscious in a bedroom at his mother's home, where officers also found drugs and paraphernalia.

Cumulatively, Leinenbach is charged with felonies, including strangulation, burglary, trespassing and theft, as well as misdemeanor simple assault, terroristic threats, DUI, unauthorized use of a vehicle and drug possession.

Leinenbach will next appear for a formal arraignment in Butler County Common Pleas Court.
