Scoop hopes to stay perfect in football playoffs

The playoff stage has not been too big for me and my 9-0 record in the postseason speaks for itself.

We're down to four teams and three of them — Karns City, Union/A-C Valley and Slippery Rock — are all preparing for rematches with district titles on the line.

I carry a 90-15 record into this weekend's action and as the end of the season nears, I aim to stay sharp.

North Catholic vs. Avonworth — The Trojans survived a quarterfinal meeting with Keystone Oaks last week, 48-41.

Avonworth provides a stiffer test, most notably running back Ian Syam and his 21 touchdowns.

North has incredible talent on offense with the likes of Joey Prentice, Kyle Tipinski, Jack Fennell and a stout line is blocking for them.

But the district semifinal round has been a stumbling block in the past for the Trojans and I see that being the case again Friday.

Score: Avonworth 33-26

Karns City vs. Ridgway — I have some numbers for you: 428, 369, 312, 311. That's the four best yardage totals for Karns City's ground attack in games this season.

The Gremlins chewed up 269 rushing yards in a 35-0 win over Ridgway a month ago. Maybe the Elkers find a way to defend better in the rematch, but there's not much gameplanning you can do when facing an irresistable force. Karns City is just stronger and tougher up front and the line is blocking for some wrecking balls disguised as running backs.

The Gremlins will leave the field in Brockway as District 9 Class 2A champions.

Score: Karns City 37-13

Union/A-C Valley vs. Redbank Valley — The Falcon Knights' eight turnovers spelled doom for the team in a 28-6 loss to Redbank in October.

With the District 9 Class 1A title on the line this time, they will do a much better job of holding onto the ball and the defense — Mikey Card, Carter Terwint, Skyler Roxbury and Co. — won't give up many big plays.

However, Redbank's tall receivers Chris Marshall (6-3) and Marquese Gardlock (6-4) will make a couple of crucial plays downfield and that will be the difference.

Score: Redbank Valley 18-13

Slippery Rock vs. Grove City — This is a Saturday matinee at Slippery Rock University's Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, with District 10 Class 3A bragging rights at stake.

The Rockets dominated the meeting with Grove City in the regular season, thumping the Eagles 34-7.

I have no doubt this will be a much closer game. Eagles' quarterback Hunter Hohman is coming off a masterful performance against Fort LeBoeuf, rushing for two touchdowns and passing for three.

But Slippery Rock's defense, led by lineman Tony Pilosi, will contain him and the Eagles just enough to earn a victory.

Score: Slippery Rock 20-16

Scoop can't decide which game to fly over Friday.
