Freeport's Jacksen Reiser wraps up Ambridge's Sedrick Seymour after a short gain during the Yellowjackets' 34-6 WPIAL Class 3A football playoff win Fruiday night. The Bridgers did not score on Freeport's defense.

BUFFALO TWP — Garrett King and Zach Clark could've pinched themselves. Chances are, in the stinging cold at Freeport Area Stadium, they might not have even felt it.

Having longed for a home playoff game since the venue was built in 2015, the Yellowjackets finally got what they'd been wishing for Friday night. And visiting Ambridge was no match as King and Clark played their parts in four scores, leading the host 'Jackets to a 34-6 win.

“I kept asking myself, 'Was I dreaming?'” Clark gushed. “I love everything about tonight.”

“It's a dream come true,” King said of trotting out behind center to start the game. “I've been thinking about stuff like this since I was playing youth football. Line played great, all my backs played great, everyone, it's just a team win.”

Junior Ben Lane, who led the team with 947 total yards entering the contest, was unable to play.

“He'll be back and we'll just continue with what we do,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said.

Without him, the 'Jackets offense could only muster seven yards over its first two series, both three-and-outs. Its third time with the ball was even more troubling.

Junior Gavin Croney was thrown in at quarterback and his give to the tailback was mishandled. The Bridgers' D'Saun Harmon picked the football up and brought it back 70 yards for the game's first points.

Freeport's next possession was short-lived yet again.

After getting the ball back, the visitors' Sedrick Seymour squirted through a mass of bodies for a 21-yard gain, his longest of the night. Parker Lucas sacked Deavon Ivory afterward, finally providing some much-needed momentum.

Clark and Shane Jack lit the fuse with emphatic carries, guiding the 'Jackets downfield. King finished the drive off with an eight-yard scramble, being picked up by a pair of defenders and somersaulting past the goal-line.

“Zach Clark is shifty like a jitterbug,” Gaillot said. “And then Shane will run you over.”

Later, King zipped a 12-yard strike to Clark, putting his team up 14-6 at the break. The passer, who's overcoming a torn ligament in his elbow, was cleared to throw before the game. Throughout the season, he'd still been helping at wideout and defensive back.

“He had that touchdown pass and I was really happy for him,” Gaillot said. “(With) everything that he's gone through. We had some ups and downs. The whole team did this season. We played some really tough games and I think that prepared us for right now.

“He's like the poster child of a true teammate.”

The teams went scoreless in the next frame, but Freeport's 10-play, 54-yard drive that began in the third quarter and bled over to the fourth allowed the 'Jackets more comfort. Clark capped it with a seven-yard run and the next drive, which lasted all of one snap, with a 28-yarder. He also intercepted Ivory shortly after.

Jack ran it in from four yards out and less than two minutes to go to put a cherry on the win.

Along with the success the offensive group had, Andrew Sullivan notched three sacks. Jacksen Reiser and Aidan Lindsey added one each. The defense as a whole conceded 54 net yards. The joyous student section, decked out in camouflage, joined the players on the field after the final whistle.

“It was great seeing the band and cheerleaders out there with the kids,” Gaillot said. “That's what high school football is about.”
